File Upload Errors
Jump ahead to:
Having trouble uploading files? Here's what might be going on.
Some people have had trouble uploading files — especially when attaching something to a message or comment. Sometimes the upload doesn’t start or fails partway through.
In certain cases, we've traced this back to a connection error called ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT
. If you're seeing this error, or a generic This file could not be uploaded
error message, you're not alone — and there are ways to troubleshoot it.
What this error means
The ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT
and This file could not be uploaded
errors generally happen when your computer tries to set up a secure connection to our servers, but something gets in the way and breaks that connection. This issue isn’t unique to Basecamp — it shows up on other websites too, especially ones protected by Cloudflare (which helps us keep Basecamp fast and secure).
Most of the time, the problem is something happening on your device/computer, browser, or internet connection. Cloudflare just helps us detect the problem and reports it as an error message on your screen.
What might be causing it (and how to fix it)
Here are the most common causes and how to address them:
- Network control software (often on gaming laptops)
If you're using a laptop or PC from some brands like Alienware, MSI, or Dell, you might have software called "Killer Control Center" (or similar). This software tries to manage your internet connection and prioritize certain traffic — but it can sometimes interrupt secure uploads.
What to do: Try turning off features like Advanced Stream Detect or uninstalling the Killer software altogether.
- Antivirus or firewall programs
Some antivirus tools try to scan secure web traffic for safety. They do this by stepping in between your browser and the website, but that process can cause upload problems.
What to do: Look in your antivirus or firewall settings for options like "HTTPS scanning" or "SSL inspection" and try turning them off temporarily.
VPNs or Proxies
Using a VPN or a proxy can sometimes change how your internet traffic is handled, which may interfere with secure connections.
What to do: Turn off your VPN or proxy and see if the upload works afterward.
Browser extensions
Some browser add-ons (like ad blockers or privacy tools) can interfere with secure connections.
What to do: Try uploading a file using your browser's private/incognito mode, which usually disables extensions. Or try a different browser altogether.
Outdated software
Older browsers or operating systems may not support newer security standards properly.
What to do: Make sure your browser, operating system, and any internet-related drivers are up to date.
Internet settings or equipment
In some cases, certain settings on your internet connection or router, or even your specific computer/device might prevent uploads from working correctly.
What to do: Try connecting using a different device and/or a different network — for example, switch from your desktop computer on a Wi-Fi connection to your phone on mobile data or to another Wi-Fi connection. If it works there, the issue may be with your specific device and/or your specific home or office network.
