Recurring To-dos

Setting To-dos to Repeat

When you create a dated to-do in Basecamp, there's an option to mark the to-do as recurring. You can decide how often this task should repeat and how long it should repeat for:

Similar to recurring events, to-dos can be set up to repeat every day, every week, every other week, or every year.

There are also other pre-defined options for a to-do to recur every weekday (Monday through Friday), every month on the day of the month you've chosen (ex: every 4th Tuesday), or every month on that day (ex: the 25th day of each month):

In addition to those, you can configure your own Weekly or Monthly custom repeat option:

After you create that to-do, you will see a 'repeat' πŸ”„ icon next to its title β€” this will be the Primary to-do that will control and create all the future to-do instances in the series:

The to-dos you see with a 'calendar' πŸ—“οΈ icon are the to-do instances that are automatically created from a Primary To-do:

If a to-do is not completed before the next instance is created, it will become overdue and you'll see them pile up like this:

Clean up your list by marking the to-do instances with the 'calendar' πŸ—“οΈ icon as completed:

πŸ—’οΈ NOTE: You can only set a to-do to recur for tasks due today or a date in the future. You can't set a to-do to recur when the original due date is for yesterday or any day in the past.

Editing a Recurring To-do

To edit a to-do that affects all to-do instances moving forward, you'll want to make sure you edit the primary to-do that has the πŸ”„ icon:

Then, you'll click the more options menu "β€’β€’β€’" located on the top right and select Edit:

Any changes made to a primary to-do will automatically apply to all future to-dos.

For example, if you change the due date of a recurring to-do, it'll change the due date for future to-dos. Same if you were to change how frequently the to-do repeats:

To edit just one to-do in a series, you'll want to select the to-do instance with the 'calendar' πŸ—“οΈ icon:

Click the more options menu "β€’β€’β€’" located on the top right and select Edit:

Any edits made to a to-do instance will only apply that one to-do. Any future to-dos created from the primary to-do will not reflect those changes.

Also, if you comment on or boost a to-do instance, it will not copy over to any other to-dos in the past and it won't have an effect on future to-do instances.

Deleting or Archiving a Recurring To-do

To delete or archive a recurring to-do, you'll want to make sure to select the primary to-do with the 'repeat' πŸ”„ icon:

Click the more options menu "β€’β€’β€’" located on the top right and select Put in the Trash or Archive:

After you delete or archive the primary to-do, you will no longer see new instances of that to-do.

To delete or archive just one to-do instance without affecting future to-dos in the series, you'll want to select the to-do with the 'calendar' πŸ—“οΈ icon:

Click the more options menu "β€’β€’β€’" located on the top right and select Put in the Trash or Archive:

When you delete or archive a to-do instance, no other to-dos in that series will be affected.

πŸ—’οΈ NOTE: Recurring to-dos will appear differently than recurring events on the Schedule β€” only the next due to-do will be shown.
